Koko, the gorilla famous for her ability to communicate in sign language, has died at 46. She passed away in her sleep at The Gorilla Foundation’s preserve in California’s Santa Cruz Mountains.
On July 4, 1971, the western lowland gorilla was born. Within a year, animal psychologist Francine “Penny” Patterson began to teach Koko sign language. From then on, Koko’s extraordinary communication skills inspired people across the globe.
“Koko’s capacity for language and empathy has opened the minds and hearts of millions,” The Gorilla Foundation said in its statement about the passing of its beloved friend.
